Carey was almost 5'10 tall before she stepped up to the leading model. The popularity of her with American designers Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was very high. Her father, an accomplished scientist, who was awarded the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of the Year award is a highly respected geologist. Her father was a geologist who traveled the globe as a part of his career. Modeling began part time when she was a student attending college at University of Colorado and caught the eye of a rep from the Ford model Agency in New York. The model briefly studied and lived in Paris prior to returning to New York. Her modeling and college career took off and she appeared on Vogue's, Glamour's, as well as many other covers of magazines. In between her modeling assignments she was a full-time student obtaining a major in literature at New York University. After graduation, in New York she began to study acting. Her first acting experience was in as a character alongside Robin Williams in the 1986 film 'Club Paradise. Her leisure time is spent in wind surfing, skiing as well as rock climbing, and white water river rafting.
